6 Resolutions to Taste More From Your Cigars in 2024

If you're looking to elevate your cigar experience in 2024, consider adopting these six resolutions aimed at refining your palate and unlocking a wealth of flavors with every draw.

Commit to Shutting Out the Noise

The single largest factor that will help you taste more from your cigars is focus. I love how cigars bring people together, but every now and then we need to take our own journeys away from the distractions of people, phones, sounds, and other smells. Honing our sense of smell and taste can be just as much of an exercise in shutting off our other senses, allowing our bodies to experience one thing fully instead of a multitude of sensations on autopilot.

You can even do this with your food each meal. Close your eyes, chew slowly, and let your mind focus on what you’re tasting in a way it probably hasn’t in a very long time.

Prioritize Pre-Light Rituals

Before lighting up, take a moment to engage in pre-light rituals that can enhance your sensory experience. Smell the unlit cigar's aroma, noting the scents emanating from the wrapper, filler, and foot. Experiment with the cold draw to detect notes of sweetness, spiciness, or earthiness.

These preliminary steps can provide valuable insights into the potential flavor profile awaiting you. They can also be a complete red herring; the important part is activating these senses and developing focus, intention, and perception through the ritual.

Explore Diverse Flavor Categories

Resolve to expand your palate by actively identifying and categorizing flavors. Train your taste buds to recognize basic flavor categories such as sweet, spicy, woody, nutty, earthy, and creamy. This foundational knowledge will serve as a roadmap for identifying more nuanced flavors in the future.

The more tastes and smells that you have experienced, the more you will be able to identify from the way your cigar tastes and smells. Be adventurous in your training.

Diversify Your Collection

Likewise, diversifying your cigar collection will serve you well this year and beyond. The journey we all take is different, but I’m always amazed at how similar a lot of the paths we choose are. Most of the time a new cigar enthusiast starts off in the mild-medium category, quickly ramps up to full-bodied cigars, and eventually settles back into the medium or medium+ category for most of their daily drivers.

Diversifying your cigar collection gives you more tools in your tool belt on the road to developing your palate. Burn to Learn and Light It Before You Spite It are two phrases that I find great enjoyment in sharing. And it doesn’t have to be new brands or blends, you could begin diversifying just be selecting different vitolas (sizes) than you normally would to see how it changes the experience.

Document Your Journey

Create a cigar journal to document your smoking experiences. Take notes on the flavors, aromas, and overall impressions of each cigar. This personalized record will not only help you track your preferences but also serve as a valuable resource for refining your palate over time. A great way that I’ve seen this done is to use glue to fasten the band to a page and then write notes underneath it, or just write a few tasting notes on the back of the band if that’s more your style.

Encourage friends to do the same, and discuss your word associations over time. Not only will you find more to look for when you enjoy that cigar again, but you’ll also find that different people experience the same sensation differently. For instance, I consider floral notes in a cigar to be on the sweeter spectrum but some of my friends consider those notes to be on the bitter spectrum.

Engage with the Cigar Community

Like mentioned above, engaging in discussions, attending tastings, and sharing your experiences with others can expose you to different perspectives and broaden your understanding of cigar flavors. The collective knowledge of the cigar community can be a valuable asset on your journey to taste more from each cigar.

One great way to hit several of these resolutions all at once is to establish a cigar exchange with someone online or in your local area. You don’t always have to participate in a box pass or similar organized event, it could just be you and a friend bringing a cigar for the other person to light up for the day and talk about. This is especially helpful if each person brings a cigar they know well and takes the time to get to know the other person’s preferences.
