As the end of 2017 approaches, we wanted to review the year and see if we can take a stab at guessing the future. We’ve hand selected nine readily available, boutique cigars that we believe you’ll see a lot of in the upcoming Top 10 Cigars of 2017 lists.
Edition One Cloud Hopper ($5 - $8 Category)
The Edition One Cloud Hopper came on the scene earlier this year with so little of a splash that you’d think it was a soft release. Much like Kyle Gellis did with the Warped Lirio Rojo, his younger brother Devin Gellis decided to let the cigar and brand speak for itself. This under the radar, AGANORSA puro seeks to redefine the $6 market for cigars.
Brand: Edition One
Factory: TABSA
Tasting Notes: Pepper, Leather, Dried Fruit, Graham Cracker, Mild Coffee
Serino Wayfarer ($5 - $8 Category)
After the initial release of the Serino Royale series last year, it was hard to imagine a follow up that would be received with similar fanfare. Enter Carson Serino and his personal Warfarer series designed to captivate the medium-bodied enthusiast. Inspired by a trip filled with Cuban cigars, this series is a slam dunk for Serino and cigar smokers everywhere.
Brand: Serino Cigars
Factory: La Corona
Tasting Notes: Leather, Toasted Coconut, Earth, Oak, Cream, Cedar, Nuts, Caramel, Cinnamon, Milk Chocolate
Hit & Run Corona Gorda ($9 - $14 Category)
Matt Booth, formerly of Room 101, teamed up with Caldwell Cigars to announce his reentry to the cigar market with the Hit & Run. It’s rare that a collaborative effort seamlessly merges all parties involved, but in this case you can taste the signature hints of both Caldwell’s and Booth’s influence. Smoke this one with your morning coffee and spread the word – Boofy’s back!
Brand: Caldwell Cigars feat. Matt Booth
Factory: Tabacalera William Ventura
Tasting Notes: Cedar, Graham Cracker, Mild Pepper, Maple Syrup, Citrus
Dapper El Borracho ($9 - $14 Category)
Dapper’s El Borracho translates into The Drunk and is intoxicatingly smooth and complex. Ian Reith blended El Borracho to explore what’s possible with the Mexican San Andres wrapper and Nicaraguan combo. What begins as a milder experience builds into a crescendo of flavors bursting through every puff, putting this cigar on our radar within minutes of toasting the foot.
Brand: Dapper Cigar Co
Factory: NACSA
Tasting Notes: Cream, Leather, Earth, Chocolate, Cherry, Cedar, Cinnamon, Caramel, Coffee
Patina Habano Robusto ($9 - $14 Category)
Earlier this year, Mo Maali of Patina Cigars defied everyone’s predictions of a lackluster 2017 by launching a new cigar brand. Patina Habano comes in four sizes with four unique experiences, playing to the strengths of each blend. As a cigar reviewer before becoming a brand owner, Mo knows the importance of first impressions and positively knocked this debut out of the park.
Brand: Patina Cigars
Factory: Casa Favili (Mombacho)
Tasting Notes: Cedar, Leather, Dried Fruit, Peanuts, Baking Spices, Citrus
Davidoff 702 Series ($15 - $20 Category)
The 702 Series is yet another example of why Davidoff is one of the most innovative brands in the industry right now. Rather than remain complacent in their reputation as a premier brand, Davidoff merged the classic blend with a hybrid Ecuadorian Habano wrapper tastefully named the 702 wrapper. What resulted was a masterpiece cigar that features full flavors with the smoothest delivery possible. This ain’t your Father’s Davidoff.
Brand: Davidoff
Factory: CiDav
Tasting Notes: Cream, Leather, Pepper, Woods, Coffee, Bread Pudding, Chocolate
Pappy Van Winkle Tradition ($15 - $20 Category)
Over six years ago, Willie Herrera created three blends for Drew Estate. One would go on to become Herrera Esteli and the other would by hand selected by Julian Van Winkle to bear the name of Pappy Van Winkle Tradition. Striking the perfect balance between body, strength, construction, and flavor, the Tradition feels at home bearing the Pappy symbol of luxury.
Brand: Pappy Van Winkle by Drew Estate
Factory: La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate
Tasting Notes: Hay, Graham Cracker, Cream, Cocoa, Cedar, Sweet Rolls
Davidoff Winston Churchill Late Hour ($15 - $20 Category)
Honoring someone like Sir Winston Churchill is no easy task, yet Davidoff pulls it off with as much class and vigor as you’d expect. Underneath the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper you’re introduced to tobacco from Condega, Nicaragua that’s been aged in speyside whiskey casks for six months. It’s not a mistake that Davidoff scored two spots on our expectations list – they’re continually pushing the envelope with sophisticated cigars like The Late Hour that engage the entire palate.
