My Father La Opulencia Review - Blind review at Small Batch Cigar

LA OPULENCIA REVIEW - WISCONSIN

Summary: If I were to describe this cigar in just one word, that word would be 'bold'.

Some cigars give you hints of a flavor and you have to search it out. Not this cigar. It started by smacking me in the mouth with chocolate. Then a quick transition to a strong nutty flavor. Boom - bold pepper. Pow, transition to coffee. Every puff brought a very clear, strong taste that was different from previous puffs. Walnut. Peanut. Oak. Earth. Molasses. Salt. Nutmeg. Orange. Cinnamon. Toasted marshmallow. Graham cracker. Gingerbread. Cereal grain. Creaminess. Caramel, building up and lasting on the finish.

It wasn't just the flavors that were bold; this little guy packed a nicotine punch too. Boom, flavor. Boom, nicotine.

If You Like That, You Might Like This: If you like your cigars strong and bold, this is your cigar. If you've been developing your palate and want to try to pick out a variety of very clear flavor notes, this is a good smoke for it too.

Pairing Suggestion: Coke all day.

Purchase Recommendation to a Friend:  Fiver. Flavors were awesome. Not always in the mood for that strong a nicotine hit, though.

LA OPULENCIA REVIEW - CALIFORNIA

Summary: The first few puffs are dousing my palate with vegetal black tea, honey, and cornflakes. Cool mint on the retrohale. Is this love or lust? Time will tell I guess. Solid ash. Curvy burn. Must be L U S T .

This thing is burning quickly. Blinked and I’m already into the second third. Black and green tea combo. The complexity has really tapered off now. Some woody notes are showing up.

Coffee flavors are waking up my palate for this final third. Ash has been solid throughout. Getting a tad bit bitter. No more profile changes at the finish. Retrohale remained cool like Luke’s hands.

If You Like That, You Might Like This: If you like this, you probably like bacon bits on your doughnuts.

Pairing Suggestion: Pair with a stout.

Purchase Recommendation to a Friend:  Fiver. I was in heaven for the first 7 minutes if you know what I mean.

LA OPULENCIA REVIEW - OREGON

Summary: Box-pressed cigars with a sharp press always get my attention. This one was no different. It was a medium brown color on the wrapper and felt firmly filled. The wrapper had some noticeable tooth. Full disclosure, my cigar had a small hole in the wrapper about a half inch from the foot. Pretty sure it didn’t affect the performance of the cigar but, there you have it. Additionally, the cap wasn’t the most expertly applied I’ve seen.

The wrapper and foot agreed in unison with simple notes of dry hay, mild spice and a wood note far in the profile. Readers may think I am crazy but the cold draw offered a hint of baking spice and...navy bean soup. Admittedly, I thought it was weird as well. I’m not even sure that can be a tasting note but thats what you’re getting!

The cigar started with leather, earth, salt and a touch of cocoa. I experienced a rather rapid transition to just natural tobacco and salt. While I wasnt particularly liking the flavors, the construction was spot on with a perfect burn, solid ash and good smoke production. Near the halfway mark, leather and salt remained in front with a hint of coffee and floral notes on the finish. Cedar managed to fight it’s way into the mix, but it was heavily overshadowed by the salty, mineral note that seemed to dominate from start to finish.

If You Like That, You Might Like This: If you like this cigar you probably like anchovy stew.

Pairing Suggestion: I’d pair this with water....as I did. Have plenty on hand.

Purchase Recommendation to a Friend:  I can’t really recommend more than a single stick purchase here. Maybe I smoked the one made on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Participants in this blind review were completely unaware of the cigar they were evaluating until all submissions were received and processed. Each participant was asked to answer a summary paragraph, an if/than statement, a pairing suggestion, and a purchase suggestion. Cigars were provided by Small Batch with only the expectations of candid responses.  All pictures, information, and formatting were completed by a Coordinator outside of the reviewing process.
