Cigar of the Week: Cohiba Serie M Roja 2024

Cohiba’s Serie M is a really neat project hailing from El Titan de Bronze in Miami, Florida. The series began in 2021 and if you haven’t smoked the original yet, I implore you to find some and give them a go! The original scored exceptionally well with our Blind Review Panel as well as the world over – it’s just a darn good cigar.

The Serie M Roja received mixed reviews from our Blind Review Panel, scoring a Box recommendation, 5-pack recommendation, and Single recommendation respectively. That review was at the beginning of June, about 6 weeks after release, and I’ve been smoking them since. I believe the last few months have improved this cigar in a big way and wanted to fire one up under inspection today. My pairing choice is plain carbonated water, although I’ll probably pull some espresso after the first half is documented.

Lighting the closed foot, I get milk chocolate and leather off just the wrapper leaf. Igniting the rest of the cigar, pepper, baking spices, and Pumpernickel complete the cast. It’s a solid medium-body cigar with plenty of lingering creaminess that was absent on the first handful of these I smoked earlier this year.

Pepper is the perfect contrast on this cigar. It’s not heavy-handed in the least and is quite complimentary. Just enough to add layers to the experience. If I’m not focused on it, the Serie M Roja tastes fairly sweet with nuances of milk chocolate, cinnamon, and brioche being at the forefront. It’s only when I give it my undivided attention that I realize the role pepper is playing in making the other notes pop.

Around the halfway point, pumpernickel surges again with a vengeance. What a ride! Beginning the second third fresh, I’m picking up a decent amount of juniper and leather for a crazy Gin & Tonic combo for the first several puffs after the ash drop. Chocolate, bread, and leather nuances build afterward, and juniper quickly fades.

At times, I’m reminded of the original Cohiba Serie M Toro. Probably because they share the same wrapper, and I suspect a good amount of crossover in the filler leaves. If you’re wondering, I wouldn’t say this one is as good as the first 2021 release – but if you loved that one I think you’ll enjoy these quite a bit. My favorite pairing so far has been High West Bourbon as well as coffee in the morning.

I’m also comparing the original release that I still have a couple of in my humidor and time made them beautiful. There’s a good chance that the Serie M Roja will develop into something amazing in a few years.
